Evaluation criteria for speaking performance

INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION

  • 5 points:    Logically structured and on-topic speech; full participation in the discussion, proper initiating of the discussion and responding to the partner's statements;
  • 4 points:    Speech mostly logically structured and to the point; fairly active participation/initiating discussion and responding to partner's statements;
  • 3 points:    Speech not always logically structured and on topic; not very active participation / infrequent discussion initiation, poor responsiveness to partner's statements;
  • 2 points:    Speech not very logically structured and often off-topic; poor participation/lack of discussion initiation, very poor reaction to partner's statements;
  • 0 points:    Speech mostly illogical and off-topic; lack of participation in the discussion or reaction to the partner’s statements due to misunderstanding.

PRONUNCIATION AND FLUENCY

  • 5 points:    Pronunciation completely understandable, fluent speech, almost without hesitation;
  • 4 points:    Pronunciation very slightly impaired, speech reasonably fluent with slight hesitation; 
  • 3 points:    Pronunciation sometimes impairing comprehension; hesitant speech, some statements unfinished;
  • 2 points:    Pronunciation makes understanding very difficult; speech with hesitation, many statements unfinished;
  • 0 points:    Pronunciation almost incomprehensible, too many hesitations, sentences mostly unfinished;

LANGUAGE STRUCTURES AND CORRECTNESS

  • 5 points:    Rich range of language structures; minor grammatical errors, mainly due to ambitious attempts at complex statements;
  • 4 points:    Good range of language structures; occasional grammatical errors not affecting the comprehensibility;
  • 3 points:    Adequate range of language structures; numerous grammatical errors not affecting comprehensibility; 
  • 2 points:    Limited range of language structures; grammatical errors sometimes affecting comprehensibility; 
  • 0 points:    Poor range of language structures; numerous grammatical errors making speech incomprehensible;  

VOCABULARY

  • 5 points:    Very rich vocabulary
  • 4 points:    Large vocabulary
  • 3 points:    Appropriate/sufficient vocabulary
  • 2 points:    Limited vocabulary
  • 0 points:    Deficient/poor vocabulary

The GRADING SCALE :

  • 0-10 points - fail/insufficient (2)
  • 11-12 points - sufficient (3)
  • 13-14 points - sufficient plus (3+)
  • 15-16 points - good (4)
  • 17-18 points - good plus (4+)
  • 19-20 points - very good (5)
